Sphinx Enamel Pin
THE SPHINX: The Sphinx of Greek mythology guarded the entrance to the city of Thebes, sent by Hera as a punishment for the disobedient thebans. She allows travelers passage if they answer her riddles correctly, and tears them to pieces if they fail to do so. After Oedipus solves her riddles she throws herself to her death in despair...but my favorite version of her story from Jean Cocteau’s The Infernal Machine she instead provides a naive and arrogant Oedipus with the answers in order to kill herself, freeing her from the violent post. She is full of wisdom, wit, and savage power. Threatening indeed!
- 1.3" tall with one post for a snug fit

ABOUT THE SERIES:
The Monster Maidens series was born out of recent comments regarding “nasty women” and my longtime love of mythology. These mythological hybrids embody power, often gendered in some way, that heroes (usually male) defeat or resist. These "nasty" female-associated attributes are given a partially inhuman form to indicate their villainy, compelling with the human side, destroying with the beast.
