THE HARPY: A rapacious monster described as having a woman’s head and a bird’s wings and claws. Word origin from Greek harpuiai meaning ‘snatchers.’ Even in modern usage, a harpy is defined as “a grasping, unpleasant woman.” Are they inherently unpleasant, or unpleasant because they grasp?
From Dante’s Inferno, in the harpy-infested 7th circle of Hell:
Here the repellent harpies make their nests,
Who drove the Trojans from the Strophades
With dire announcements of the coming woe.
They have broad wings, with razor sharp talons and a human neck and face,
Clawed feet and swollen, feathered bellies; they caw
Their lamentations in the eerie trees.

ABOUT THE SERIES:
The Monster Maidens series was born out of recent comments regarding “nasty women” and my longtime love of mythology. These mythological hybrids embody power, often gendered in some way, that heroes (usually male) defeat or resist. These "nasty" female-associated attributes are given a partially inhuman form to indicate their villainy, compelling with the human side, destroying with the beast.
